Chapter 12

SHAWNA MADE IT ALL the way to her shelter before she caved to the panic and began shaking and trembling. She’d always had magic and when she was younger, her father had employed someone to teach her how to use it. But that had been a long time ago, and she hadn’t been powerful enough to do anything serious since then.

Not like what had just happened at the house.

The worst part had been her lack of control. That terrified her. She’d never been in a situation where she lost all control, and her power had never been so strong that she caused such damage.

She thought about the dress and her heart sank, fresh tears stinging her eyes. She covered her face and let her emotions pour out, allowing herself a moment to fall apart.

When her sobs finally ceased, Shawna pulled herself back together again, swallowing her tears. She couldn’t afford to come undone and stay that way. No one was there to look out for her, and if she was somehow incapable of doing it herself, she was going to die.

Survival had been the most important thing to her since the moment she’d left her father’s house a year ago. She simply couldn’t give up now.

After drying her cheeks, she attempted to regain confidence in what she was doing. Shawna started thinking about the things that needed to be put in place for her plan to save her father’s house to succeed.

Attending the ball had been the most important next step. If she couldn’t speak to the king, it didn’t matter what she did, her father’s house would be sold, and she would be stuck living her life on the streets.

She wanted to live the life she’d had once before. She wanted her father back too, but that was impossible. But to keep the house would be keeping his memory alive. There was no way her father would have wanted Shawna to lose everything.

The problem was the dress. It was ruined, now. There was no way she going to be able to go back to get another one. No doubt, Valorie would make sure there was always someone on the lookout for her now. Even if Shawna could sneak into the house again, she knew that the sisters would have made arrangements for their dresses to be hidden away or spelled shut so that Shawna couldn’t reach them.

Getting caught had ruined her chances.

She had no money. Buying a new dress, or even a second-hand one, wasn’t going to work.

The only other thing she could think of was to talk to Blaze. She knew it was a long shot, but it was her last hope.

After pulling herself together enough that she didn’t look like she was on the verge of falling apart anymore, Shawna left her shelter and made her way through the city.

She was more on her guard than ever before, always looking over her shoulder to make sure that she wasn’t being followed and the authorities weren’t looking out for her.
